The mixing function of the intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder is the most important, so the screw configuration design of the mixing section is of great significance. It has recently been found that in the melting section of the twin-screw, the size of the dispersed phase of the polymer blend decreases sharply, from the initial millimeter-scale macroscopic particles or powders to tens of microns after the end of melting.
After the initial blending stage, the larger particles of the dispersed phase of the blend are further reduced in size to the final micron scale under the action of shear.
The melt delivery section has much less effect on mixing than the melting section has on the blend morphology. In other words, the particle size of the dispersed phase changes greatly during the softening (for amorphous polymers) or melting (for semi-crystalline polymers) stages, while the particle size of the dispersed phase does not change much when the polymer is completely melted.
